Back in the 19th century, one symbol of exclusivity and wealth was to carry around a pocket watch. While Europe had their Swiss-made watches, the West had some too. One of them was Ingersoll. Since the 1880’s, two brothers Roger and Charles Ingersoll envisioned a world wherein everyone would be able to enjoy the luxury of having a watch. This was quite a task to accomplish, especially in a time where salaries was just enough for existence for the common worker.
But for the Ingersoll brothers, this was a challenge for success. With the advent of mass production, they were able to make their line of Ingersoll watches while keeping the cost of production down. One million watches were made during the initial production and sold for a dollar, which was a day’s salary at that time. This is the very reason how they won the hearts of watch lovers.
Their popularity did not end there. Even through President Roosevelt’s trip to Africa called for the acknowledgement of Ingersoll as coming from American soil. This prompted the brothers to step up production to compensate for the sudden increase in demand.
Some milestones in watch making history were also established by Ingersoll, among which is the smallest pocket watch and the first watch produced which was made for night reading (radiolite watch).
The line of watches which sported the Ingersoll brand started from the early pocket watches, to the self winding automatic watch, to the modern and advanced automatic mechanical wrist watches. Each timepiece that left their production line carries a sense of pride and an image of highest quality.
How the “West Americas” was won is a small matter as compared as to how the main American subcontinent in the WEST was won by the Ingersol brothers. Today, the dollar may be a small amount but it carries with it a special meaning in history of watch making.
